Why I became an OT:

After graduating college I began working with children diagnosed with Autism in day treatment, home, and in the community.  I especially gravitated towards children who had high sensory needs and those who struggled with simple, daily tasks due to being overwhelmed by their environment.  It was at this point that I recognized the importance of sensory integration and changed my approach to one that focused on self-regulation and learning through sensory experiences.  I also loved the concept of occupational therapy- helping others develop the skills needed to be independent or functional in their occupations. For children, this means being able to play, go to school, have friends, and get their basic needs met.  This is why I became an OT.

More about me:

I grew up in a small town near Mankato, so I love being outdoors, walking barefoot, and getting dirty.  During school I lived with my grandma who had dementia.  I have 10 years of memories and interesting stories from this time.  When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family, including my niece and nephew, exploring, traveling, Netflix, and playing piano.

Special training, certification, and interests:

Master’s Project on developmental trauma and sensory integration which included creating sensory spaces for classrooms in the metro area.

I love being able to continue my education outside of school within areas of special interest, including sensory integration.  I hope to grow my base of knowledge and training in the future.
